Research, conservation, restoration
and communication of Aquileia Heritage

Fondazione Aquileia was established for the promotion and enhancement of the archaeological site of Aquileia with the endorsement of the regional law n. 18/2006, which provided for the constitution of a legal entity with the participation of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, the Municipality of Aquileia, the Province of Udine and the Archbishopric of Gorizia.

Fondazione Aquileia falls in the list of a number of new bodies introduced with art. 115 of the Legislative Decree n. 42/2004.

In a draft agreement between the Italian State and Regions, Fondazione Aquileia was described as an essential tool to prepare strategic plans, promote the development of cultural tourism, co-sponsor actions, indirectly manage enhancement initiatives, and make research, conservation and restoration of the sites granted for use.

In 2008, 28% of the archaeological sites of Aquileia were granted for use to Fondazione Aquileia, including Fondo Pasqualis, Fondo Cal, Fondo Cossar, Stalla Violin, the Necropolis. In 2009, the Archbishopric of Gorizia also granted the Südhalle area.

In December 2016 an Agreement was signed to grant for use all the remaining archaeological sites of Aquileia, and namely the forum, the river port, the Holy Way, the Comelli area with the Great Baths, Fondo ex Moro with the House of the Wounded Beasts, Fondo Cassis with the House of the Dancing Cherubs, and Fondo Violin. By virtue of this agreement, Fondazione Aquileia would care for the management, ordinary and extraordinary maintenance and enhancement of all archaeological sites, while the General Direction of Fine Arts maintained all competence for the protection of the sites, as well as of some buildings, and for the management of the National Archaeological Museum and Early Christian Museum, which make an integral part of the museum system named Polo Museale del Friuli Venezia Giulia.

In February 2018 the Agreement between the Italian State and the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia governing the enhancement of the cultural heritage of Aquileia was renewed. The document grants for use to Fondazione Aquileia (by this time the manager of Fondo Pasqualis, Fondo Cal, Fondo Cossar, Stalla Violin, the Necropolis, the Südhalle area, the forum, the river port, the Holy Way, the Comelli area with the Great Baths, Fondo ex Moro with the House of the Wounded Beasts, Fondo Cassis with the House of the Dancing Cherubs, and Fondo Violin) also the National Archaeological Museum and its storage areas, including the area of former Casa Sverzut and former Stalla Sverzut and the building currently used as headquarters for the Museum Direction; the Early Christian Museum; the building formerly named Brunner at via Roma; the area formerly named Fondo Sandrigo to the east of the river Natissa; the area formerly named Officina Moro between the forum and the former Essiccatoio; the Crypt of the excavations, south-eastern corner, based on a Memorandum of Understanding with the Archibishopric of Gorizia.

On 11th July 2018 the new Memorandum of Association entered in force.
